Premiered in 1885, Johannes Brahm's Fourth Symphony has become a pillar of the symphonic repertoire. This Norton Critical Score of the work is based on the first edition (1886), published in Berlin by Simrock, with corrections made in accordance with Brahms's autograph and his personal copy of the printed score.
The second section of this volume 'Background and Context', includes a historial essay that describes the conception, composition, publication and early reception of the symphony. It also presents selections from Brahms's correspondence with Elisabeth von Herzogenberg and Joseph Joachim that reveal reactions of the work from within Brahms's circle of friends. Sixteenth reviews of the first and early performances, half of them published in English for the first time, display the mixed reception of accorded the symphony during a tour by the Meiningen Orchestra, which premiered the work, and at its initial performances in England, the United States, and France.
In 'Analysis and Criticism', the final section of this book, eleven selections offer a wide range of comments on the Fourth Symphony. Filled with music examples, these essays and excerps -written by such scholars as Hermann Kretzschmar and Hugo Riemann, Walter Frisch and Raymond Knapp- offer many points of departure for gaining a deeper understanding of the work. A selected bibliography is included for further study.
