Gioacchino Antonio Rossini (1792-1868): Stabat mater, for Soloists (SSTB), Mixed Choir (SATB) and Orchestra. Piano Reduction.

Like many of his contemporaries, Gioachino Rossini began his compositional work writing sacred music. The training of the 19th-century Italian composers took place at the charitable institutions of the Church, ospedali, monasteries and colleges. In Bologna a member of the Minorite order, Padre Mattei (1750-1825), presided over a composition school that included among its students come of the leading composers of the century: not only Rossini, but also Pacini and Donizetti. Rossini's very first works were three youthful Masses (the first Mass was the outcome of a joint project undertaken by some of Padre Mattei's pupils) and thetiT prevalently feature the strict style, completely shorn of the theatrical qualities that were to distinguish his subsequent sacred production. The work that bridges the style of these early works and that of his maturity is the Messa di Gloria (1820), characterized by that mixture of styles that is also the distinguishing feature of the Stabat Mater (1842).
