The newly revised edition of Ludwig van Beethoven's piano sonatas in the Wiener Urtext Edition is the only one of the more recent Urtext editions on a broad source basis. It includes not only autographs, verified copies and first editions, but also early reprints published during the composer's lifetime and Haslinger's Complete Edition. This is especially important for those sonatas of which neither autographs nor transcriptions are preserved. The edition contains a critical report in German and English, in which the complex source problems of these sonatas are explained in a comprehensible way and the editorial decisions are comprehensibly justified. This makes the band an indispensable tool in the study of these outstanding works of piano literature.

Volume 3 of Beethoven's Piano Sonatas in Wiener Urtext Edition contains the Sonatas Op. 78, 79, 81a, 90, 101, 106, 109, 110, and 111. The re-revised musical text is based on several newly accessed sources. In addition, the edition contains, for the first time, a critical report in German and English in which the complex problems of the sources of these sonatas are explained and the editorial decisions justified in a comprehensible way.
