The suite by the composer Norbert von Hannenheim is characterised by the dance-like air of all four movements. It focuses the genuine power of the viola in its lowest register to produce a finely nuanced music in succinct brevity. Committed to the serial technique of his teacher Arnold Schoenberg, Hannenheim draws his compositional strength from a highly personal emotionality in this suite as well. The rhythmically exciting dialogue between the duo partners viola and piano always remains transparent, clear and comprehensible despite the melancholy mood of the suite.
