Full orchestral scores of three of the most admired works of Claude Debussy (1862-1918) are combined in this volume, all reprinted from authoritative editions.
The first is the evocative Images, the orchestral triptych (1905-12) whose individual movements were intended to suggest the national character of England (Gigues), Spain (the scintillating Iberia) and France (Rondes de Printemps).
Jeux, commissioned by Serge Diaghilev for his Ballets Russes, startled the musical public at its Paris debut in 1913 (as choreographed by Nijinsky), and later dazzled the avantgarde with its timbral subtleties, elusive structure and technical innovations.
The Martyrdom of St. Sebastian, Debussy's last vocal work for the stage, found ultimate success as an orchestral suite consisting of four excerpts: "La Cour des Lys," "Danse Extatique et Final du 1 er Acte," "La Passion" and "Le Bon Pasteur."
