As was the case for many of his works for guitar, Villa-Lobos revisited his Chôros no. 1 repeatedly piece and created several versions, which were published by different publishers in the 1920s and 1950s. He often distributed handwritten copies of the work to some of the most-renowned guitarists of his time, such as Andrés Segovia, Miguel Llobet, and Regino Sáinz de la Maza.
In this edition, edited by Frédéric Zigante, two versions of the Chôros no. 1 are presented. The first version, dated 1928, was given to Miguel Llobet, while the second version, from 1957, was published by Arthur Napoleao. The primary differences between the two versions are in the harmonies, melodic ornaments, and bassline ornaments in the 1928 version. These variations showcase the free and creative spirit that characterized early 20th century Rio de Janeiro chôroes, a genre of urban popular music from the Brazilian capital.
