Compagnon de route de Duke Ellington pendant presque quarante ans, Hodges a développé à son contact une sorte de perfection dans le travail du son qui en fait un des très grands stylistes de l?histoire du jazz. Le premier CD présente des petits joyaux gravés à la tête de sa propre formation, à une époque où il avait provisoirement repris au Duke sa liberté, le second propose une sélection de faces enregistrées pendant sa période ellingtonienne. La plupart d?entre elles sont fort justement passées à la postérité.
