Her first album, made with trumpet-genius Clifford Brown in the mid Fifties, established her in the (now overpopulated) firmament of jazz singers. She uncompromisingly pursued a demanding career - while maintaining a perfect anti-star attitude - that saw her constantly multiply enriching encounters. Gil Evans, Bill Evans, Stan Getz, John Lewis and a hundred others shared her intimacy in the art of telling (sometimes painful) stories and murmuring soft secrets.
