El cuarteto liderado por Gerry Mulligan en los años 1952 y 1953, que lanzó a la fama al trompetista Chet Baker y que también integraba Chico Hamilton, situó al gran saxofonista en un lugar privilegiado dentro del "Panteón del Jazz". Sus posteriores formaciones y sus composiciones (éstas ocupan el 2º Cd interpretadas por las orquestas de Miles Davis, Stan Kenton, Gene Krupa o el propio Mulligan) no hicieron más que consolidar con firmeza su enorme talento, que entregó al mundo del jazz una obra tan prolífica como multiforme.
