Contrairement aux trois Gráces de la Sainte Trinité des prima donna jazzistiques, Ella, Billie et Sarah, Carmen ne connut la célébrité que sur la fin de sa trentaine. En Europe, il fallut méme attendre les années 70 pour L'entendre enfin en concert. Cette femme écorchée vive, par toujours de bonne compagnie, se révélait la plus expressive des chanteuses/diseuses de ballades,une styliste de haut vol á la voix de violoncelle, á la méme altitude artistique que res amies Billie Holiday et Sarah Vaughan, de plain-pied avec les géants du jazz de sa génération, qu'elle avait fréquentés musicalement et affectivement, Kenny Clarke, qu'elle avait épousé, Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Parker, Monk... Unlike the Three Graces forming the Holy Trinity of jazz prima donnas - Ella, Billie, Sarah - Carmen McRae didn't reach fame until she was nearly forty, and didn't ring in Europe until the Seventies. This tormented, sometimes less than cheerful soul revealed herself to be the most expressive bailad-singer, and also a topflight stylist whose voice - it could round like a ceno - reached the same heights as Billie Holiday and Sarah Vaughan to share a plateau with many jazz giants of her generation, some associated with her both musically and emotionally: Kenny Clarke, whom she married, but also Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Parker and Monk.
