This second volume of the Guide to Period Instruments explores the history of musical instruments from 1800 to 1950. It describes not only the improvements and changes made to instruments that were already in existente before 1800 but also the new instruments created during that time. This was a world about to be affected by growing industrialisation: the craftsman's workshop would gradually be transformed into a factory. This second volume of the Guide has been organised along the same linea as the first: the introductory text by Jéróme Lejeune is accompanied by many photos of the various instruments as well as by illustrations from other sources; musical examples of the instruments, the unknown as well as the familiar, are also provided en 8 CDs organised according to specific themes. These excerpts also cast light on instruments that are often hidden underneath the orchestra's weight of sound.
Those who thought that such developments would only involve the instruments of Beethoven's orchestra will undoubtedly be surprised to discover such an incredibly large number of instruments: some of these were to be short-lived, but there were many that would bring new sounds and colours into the orchestra.
