The works of the gifted and prolific French composer Camille Saint-Saëns (1835-1921) embody many of the qualities considered essentially French-above all, clarity, elegance and order. A whole generation marveled at the intellectual mastery of his works and, as a virtuoso performer, his lucid keyboard interpretations.

Saint-Saëns wrote in every 19th-century musical genre (and in 1908 was the first estabhshed composer to write film music), but his most successful compositions are those based on traditional Viennese models, such as the sonatas and trios contained in this volume. Rich in imaginative rhythms, these pieces exhibit skillful workmanship, clear texture and a wonderfully effective interplay of instrumental lines and colors.
