Born in the heart of Cuba, Celia Cruz quickly became the undisputed Queen of Salsa between the Forties, when she sang with the legendary "Sonora Matancera", to the great years of the Fania label, when her bandleaders were all masters of the genre: Tito Puente, Johnny Pacheco, Willie Colon and Ray Baretto. She gave memorable concerts and made many poignant appearances in films; in both registers her majestic, colourful silhouette, her unforgettable voice and her contagious, frenzied performances left an indelible impression on several generations of salseros. The title of her last recording was "Sobreviviré" or survive; there was never any doubt that Celia Cruz would survive in the memories of music-lovers the world over.
