Elle mena en quelques trop courtes années plusieurs carrières à la fois. Sa culture, entre église et cabaret, sa voix salée-sucrée, entre cri et confidence, sa vie tumultueuse et sa grande conscience professionnelle lui permirent de chanter le blues comme personne, de combler les amateurs de rhythm and blues et de se retrouver ainsi au sommet des « hit parades », tandis que le fan de jazz la retrouvait régulièrement au milieu de ses héros, Clifford Brown, Wynton Kelly, Clark Terry, Ben Webster et cent autres. Au pays du jazz, en tout cas, Dinah compte, avec quelques autres, parmi celles, rares, qui ont ébranlé le vieux mythe de la sainte Trinité Billie-Ella-Sarah.

In a few short years she enjoyed several different careers. Her cultural background, which embraced Church and Cabaret, plus her sweet-and-sour voice ? moving from a cry to a confi dential whisper ?, her tumultuous career and extreme professionalism, all contributed to her singing the blues like no-one else. She made legions of rhythm and blues fans happy by topping the hit parades, and jazz fans regularly delighted in her feats alongside musicians who were heroes: Clifford Brown, Wynton Kelly, Clark Terry, Ben Webster and a hundred others. Whatever the domain, however, Dinah, along with a few, rare, other vocalists, will always be remembered as the singer who caused a myth to tremble: the Holy Trinity of Billie, Ella, Sarah.
