La historia de los espirituales negros o canciones del Evangelio (Góspel, God Spell), es la dramática historia de las personas afroamericanas en la esclavitud. Casi cuatro siglos de sufrimiento a causa del rechazo, el racismo y la violencia, a los que responde la resistencia, la lucha y la intensa fe inquebrantable de la comunidad negra en la esperanza de un mundo mejor, que -antes de ir al más allá- afirma el reconocimiento terrenal de sus derechos, dignidad y libertad. El encuentro entre la herencia africana y las tradiciones europeas a través de la cristiandad, dará a luz un arte totalmente original popular vocal, una belleza, una grandeza, una potencia emocional y expresiva, que asegurará la cohesión y la supervivencia de las personas de raza negra, y les dará fuerza.
